Does a Kitchen Remodel Require Gfci Outlet Installation for Every Socket?
Based on current and upcoming safety codes, a kitchen remodel requires GFCI protection for specific areas rather than every single socket in the room.
According to the National Electrical Code (NEC) and local Reseda requirements, GFCI protection is specifically mandated for:
- All kitchen countertop receptacles: These must have GFCI protection because they are areas where electricity and moisture are likely to meet.
- Sinks and wet bars: Any outlet located near a sink or wet bar requires protection to prevent electrical shock.
While every socket in the kitchen may not require its own individual GFCI device, the entire circuit serving these areas must be protected. This can be achieved in two ways:
- Receptacle GFCI: Installing a GFCI outlet at the first point in a circuit to protect that outlet and all others “downstream” on the same line.
- Circuit Breaker GFCI: Installing a specialized breaker in the electrical panel that provides protection for the entire kitchen circuit.
Because improper installation (such as reversing line and load connections) can disable these protective features, it is recommended that a licensed electrician perform the installation to guarantee code compliance.
